The first AIS was designed and constructed for General Electric Plastics by Dr. Carl Adams in 1993 in order to minimize capital and operating costs of biological treatment. The system was developed full-scale by The Advent Group, Inc. in partnership with several industries (GE Plastics, HUNTSMAN Chemicals, OLIN Corporation, Mitsubishi Chemicals). In May 2005, The Advent Group merged with ENVIRON.
Based on the patented concept of "Induced Downward Sludge Velocity," AIS significantly advanced the activated sludge process — it has no moving parts.
AIS enables both construction of new treatment facilities as well as an easy process of retrofitting existing plants. The system provides the following advantages:
minimizes investment, operation and maintenance costs
space-efficiency precludes the need for substantial land for new construction
works with high concentrations of surfactants (foaming at the aeration chamber does not impact the process)
works with poorly settling biomass (e.g. with gas bubbles attached, filamentous organisms etc.)
removes poorly biodegradable compounds, as it improves flocculation, adsorption and sedimentation
removes persistent dyes, heavy metals, cyanides, fluorides, etc.
minimizes gas emission from the reactors
Technical Capabilities:
flocculation between aeration and clarification provides ability to add chemicals to aid precipitation
parallel plate concept (sidewall angle of 55-60º) prevents plugging and ensures biomass removal
enables increase of MLSS to 6,000 - 8,000 or higher
clarifier integrated into aeration basin
possibility to apply coarse bubble or fine bubble aeration technology
